Hear what other students that have taken a GOA course have said about it:
"…Put yourself out there…Take every opportunity to get to know everyone else in the class."
"Time management is very important in an online class! Stay on top of your stuff and don't rely on [the teacher] to hold your hand the whole way. Use this opportunity to improve your ability to get stuff done."
"Don't be afraid to reach out to your teacher if you ever feel confused"
"For projects, start communicating with your partner early, even if you simply say hello."
Taking an online course can be an exciting and rewarding adventure. In order to make sure you get the most of your experience, please take a moment to reflect on what Hawken students that have taken a GOA course have said about it:
Scheduling
"Hawken will schedule your GOA class into your daily schedule but you'll most likely work on your GOA class whenever possible."
"GOA courses are REAL courses. You cannot take it as an overage or a 6th class. There is simply too much work to be able to do that."
Work Load
"You need to be aware of the overlap with the Intensive during the GOA fall semester and how that impacts your courseload."
"GOA courses run over Hawken's Spring Break which means you will be expected to complete work while on break."
"It can be easy to fall behind if you don't push yourself to stay on top of things."
Expectations
"This is not about the grade. Students enrolled in a GOA course LOVE the class and the material. They must be engaged with the teacher and communicate on a regular basis."
"Group work can be a challenge if you're paired with students that procrastinate."
"GOA courses demand a high level of integrity as you have to hold yourself to a high standard. 'My computer isn't working' will not be an acceptable excuse."
"Seniors taking a spring semester GOA course need to know that 'senioritis' is not an excuse and that the course grade will go on your transcript."
*Note: We highly recommend that GOA courses be taken as fifth courses because they require as much work as Hawken “brick and mortar” courses, however, special permission can be sought to take it as a sixth course, depending upon the student's overall academic and extracurricular responsibilities.
