Rules/how the game is played
Basketball is a team sport. Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop. The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court( 94 ft longs and 50 ft wide), and there is a hoop at each end. There are two halfs or 4 quarters in every game. There is a point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. There are two types of defences, zone and man. To move you can either “dribble” the ball win one hand or pass the ball to another teammate. You can either get 1,2, or 3 points depending on where you make the shot. Each player may have 5 personal fouls and each team may have 10 team fouls. The player who was fouled may take 1 or more shots from the foul line or throw the ball in from out of bounce. Once a player crosses the half court line with the ball they can not go back to their other side.
History
The history of basketball began with its invenetion in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than football. Over the next 4 decades the US Army and the YMCA spread development and the game of Basketball. The Basketball league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946 and became the national basketball league. Also in 1939 the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament was created and it became very important to spread awareness of basketball. Over the course of 70 years basketball became even more famous and one of the most common sports in America and the world.

Similarities
Basketball is most similar to soccer because there is the same about of players on each side. It is generally a fast paced game and there are two halfs. One that is yours and one that is the other teams. They both have rectangular fields as well. One difference is that soccer is played with your feet while basketball is played with you hands. Soccer is also much older than basketball.
